Mbali Makhathini is a Bachelor of Science, Environmental Science (University of Kwa-Zulu Natal) and Programme for Management Development (Gordon Institute for Business Science) graduate who is currently completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Business (University of Cambridge). Mbali is a registered certified natural scientist by the South African Council of Natural Scientific Professions.
Mbali holds 10 years working experience, with 5 years being in the finance sector. She is currently employed as an Environmental and Social Risk Manager by FirstRand Limited (FSR). This strategic and advisory role is focused on Group wide management of FSR’s internal and portfolio business activities with the potential to yield market, credit, reputational and regulatory risks due to environmental and social misconduct. This includes management and oversight of the Group's environmental and social risk assessment process as well as developing policy, driving strategy and undertaking projects such as portfolio stress testing to identify the bank's natural capital dependencies and climate change hotspots. Mbali represents FSR in various local and international associations such as the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative and the Equator Principles Association (EPA) where she is an elected steering committee member and Middle East and Africa Regional Coordinator. She represented FSR at the 2018 EPA AGM in Washington and looks forward to representing her organization again at the 2019 EPA AGM in Singapore.
In her personal capacity Mbali is an advocate for young black women in the corporate space, particularly those in STEM sectors. She is a Black Women in Science (BWIS) Partner, where she's assisting on the development of the online platform BWISConnect, her role entails facilitating a mentorship programme connecting young black female scientists to corporate professionals in the Sustainability field. In addition to this, she holds the title of first runner up Miss Earth South Africa (2011).
